why do cars have to have to have esp emgain that all cars had esp in the wold

mathew

My cousins Nissan Armada (Dont know if Austraila has this model) has ESP and if saved our lives we were driving on the highway doing 60mph/about 100 km/ph when a car cut us off turn out of the way it kept her in control and kept us from rolling over. It should madatory all over the world.

USA GUY

Why do car have esp and why do we have to esp on cars . old don't have esp on but why new cars

Mathew

i think the ESP may have prevented my wife from crashing her new i30 when she had to swerve & brake to avoid hitting a mob of kangaroos a few days ago

kenny

To Matt, who says, "Every driving course I've ever done has always told me that braking in an emergency situation is the worst thing to do . . . " You are a dope! Next course you do, pay attention. Braking isn't the worst thing to do in an emergency. Locking the brakes is. In helping you avoid a potential crash, ESP uses (among other things) the ABS system to stop the wheels locking under load. It's all about optimal traction, and these systems being sharper than you and I.

Hi Wanda, ESP stands for Electronic Stability Program and was developed by Bosch who invented the original technology.

Editor

Please can you tell me what ESP actually stands for?

Wanda

esp told me someone wascoming or come to a place where I was coming to

I have 2006 Hyundai Sonata V6 from the US, i have use this system couple when i did excessive turns it made sure the vehicle was on track.

Please send your postal details to myhyundai@hyundai.com.au and I'll get one to you asap, otherwise all dealers have been sent an allocation and will be able to help.

Hi Haydn, Santa Fe CRDi SX manual with ESP Stability Control will be available from June. They are literally just making their way to dealerships from the docks in the next week or two.

Editor

To the Editor, I would love to get a copy of that DVD.(How?) I would like to show a mate who thinks he is an ace driver and let HIM decide. (I personally have NO doubt as to the effectiveness of ESP - swerving to avoid a car who misjudged an overtaking move and decided to join me in my lane to avoid a head-on convinced me.) When all these ace drivers (who THINK they can outperform ESP/TCS) figure out how to brake INDIVIDUAL wheels, alter engine output, and determine the optimal response for body rotation in a split second and all at the same time - I'll sign up for THEIR driving course. Then I'll demand that all new vehicles come standard with.... well.... nothing really.... because I'll be invincible won't I! C'mon...the world is FULL of drivers who think they are better than they actually are.(I was one once - but on bikes not cars). Even if you are that good, you probably should want EVERYONE else to have ESP - to protect you from THEM.

Adam

Appreciate that I could upgrade to the SLX CRDi to get ESP however in doing so I lose the option of retaining a manual transmission. Is there any way of having both ESP and a manual transmission in the Santa Fe range?

Haydn

I don't have a hyundai, but I do have a car with ESP, much more expensive :-( But, good one with the publicity. Keep it up

Suranjaya

Hi Haydn, you'll need to upgrade to the Santa Fe SLX CRDi which has ESP Stability Control as standard. ESP Stability Control works on both manual and auto models.

Editor

Can the manual Santa Fe CDRDi SX model be fitted with ESP? If not, does it require an automatic transmission to be effective?

Haydn

Hi Matt - ESP only controls the power and individual brakes when it senses you're going out of control at a speed higher than the car can handle to put you back on track (where you are point the steering wheel). It does this by sensing the Yaw rate and float angle of the car and adjusts accordingly. Having an accident can't be avoided sometimes, but it can be limited and it has been proven that ESP can help save lives. And I urge you to find any driving instructor worth their weight in gold who'll tell you that ESP is NOT needed. I am more than happy to send a DVD to you (or anyone else) showcasing footage with Ian Luff, one of Australia's premier driving instructors, who demonstrates ESP along with some more footage from Bosch.

Editor

Every car with ESP Stability Control has this button. We recommend never to turn it off. However there may conditions where you need to. For example: Turning the ESP off button also turns off the traction control. In some conditions you may need to slip the wheels to gain traction, for example snow or a slippery boat ramp.

Editor

If Stability Control is good, why do big sports/family cars like the Falcon XR8s have buttons on the dashboard to allow it to be turned off?

George

As I said Jason, one was not an actual crash, and both the crash and the near miss were caused by this supposedly improved technology. If you read the details about "How ESP works", it works by limiting power and putting the brakes on. Every driving course I've ever done has always told me that braking in an emergency situation is the worst thing to do because that's what causes the car to roll or slide out of control. I've never had a crash in my own car, which does not have these "safety mechanisms".

Matt

ESC schould be compulsory in all cars sold in Australia - we had doubters when seatbelts were introduce, but only a fool can deny they save lifes. ESC will save lives. Looking forward to seeing Hyundai automatically include ESC across their range - Love your current Marketing Campaign. Well done for putting affordable safety on the car buyers agenda.

Emmi

Unfortunately no car can be retro-fitted with ESP. It will need to come standard with the car from purcahse.

Editor

How much would this cost to have retrofitted to a 2006 Accent?

Mark

Matt, I'm not sure if you've watched any of the videos on this site, or the top-gear tv show, or that driving on ice stuff, but no matter how good you are as a driver you can only be aided by ESP stability control. My comment questions that if you are such a good driver, how you have been in 2 car accidents to start with! I was driving with my grandfather about a year or so ago. He drives an Audi with ESP or what ever it's called on that car. It saved our lives or a kids life that day, when a kid rode his bike right out in front of us in a normal street. As we swerved missing the kid on the bike, just missing a parked car and back the other way with on-coming traffic in that street (narrow miss with a 4WD) - all doing about 50km/ph... I wouldn't buy a car with out it. No one should. I think that a lot of car companies will follow Hyundai's lead with free esp.

I guess Monash university has had 30 years n the automotive industry and knows better than I do

Peter

Persocnally, I'm against Stability Control and Traction Control. I've been in two car incidents. One was an actual accident, and the other was a near miss, but both were caused by Stability Control which limited my ability to steer, causing the car to go over to the wrong side of the road, into oncoming traffic. If I'd been in my own car (without stability control), the back of my car would have slid into line and I would have been safe. Limiting the abilities of good drivers to cover up the mistakes of the incompetent is not good practice.

Matt

Has the ESP offer increased sales?

Mark

Hi Peter. Thanks for your feedback. A single vehicle accident is when another vehicle is not involved in the impact. i.e Hitting a pole, gutter, or other. This ad shows a truck causing an obstacle, not actually being hit by the Elantra. And whilst you don’t see the silhouetted car actually impact anything, we think it is a clear illustration of the research. The ad was also created in close consultation with Monash University who approved the concept.

Editor

The situation depicted in your advertisment does not depict a a single vehicle accident.A single vehicle accident is just that a single vehicle having an accident, with no other vehicle involved. It does however show the value of ESP.

Peter

Hi Brenton, our Technical Team has advised me that to do this would require a total wiring loom replacement as well as the addition of steering, Yaw sensors and the appropriate computer systems to monitor the ABS, traction control and ESP on the car and therefore can not be done.

Editor

If ESP is so valuable, why can't I get it retrofitted to my 2-yr old Tucson Elite?

Brenton

I DRIVE AN ELANTRA AND IT HAS ESP. EVERY CAR SHOULD BE FITTED WITH ESP. WE ALL THINK WE CAN DRIVE BUT REALLY WE CANT. WITH ESP EVERY DRIVER ON THE ROAD CAN BE ASSURED OF SAFETY. ALL DRIVERS.

GABRIEL LENETTE

Ok here's a story, and I wish I had ESP for my first date. I was driving in the rain....probably a little too fast...and about to drive onto the Harbour Bridge. I was driving a Eurpoean car and showing off (as all European drivers do) ....went down a gear too many and my wheel caught a slippery white line. Before I knew it I was facing on coming traffic. Looked like a right old fool. But was not hit...actually would have made a good parallel parking. Suppose ESP would have helped but it wasn't around back then. Did the date work. Well she's my wife now so I suppose after the initial hiccup it went OK.

Reformed Hoon

Reckon ESP will be like seatbelts. In 10 years time people will be asking how we ever drove cars without it!

JaySee

Love the ad - great work Hyundai!

Paula

Last week I had to swerve past a car that changed lanes just in front of me. I'm not sure how it worked but I could feel my car (fitted with ESP) do something that meant I never felt out of control. I reckon it's a mandatory.

Jono

Great site - very informative. I drive a Mercedes with ESP and it's saved me from having an accident twice now. But it's great that Hyundai is taking the lead and making ESP affordable to everyone.

Tony

I've been in serious accident where the car didn't have ESP & slid out of control & crashed. I've had a similar situation where I've had to swerve urgently in my car, fitted with ESP & my car got back on track with no damage to me, the car or anyone else. I wouldn't buy a new car today if it didn't have ESP.
